There are many people who don’t like killing insects, and I must tell you I am one of such persons. But as lately I have been fighting fruit flies, but I don’t like to kill them. So today, I am going to share some of the techniques that can tell you how to get rid of fruit flies without killing them.
Getting rid of fruit flies without killing them in addition to giving you good karma also saves you from cleaning up the dead bodies of flies and all the mess associated with it.
So, without any further delay let’s have a look at the following methods.
How To Get Rid Of Fruit Flies Without Killing Them:
Let them Go Outside:
Do you know there is a phenomenon called ‘Phototropism’? This means that insects like fruit flies have an affinity to move towards light. So, during the day fruit flies tend to congregate on windows anyway trying, in vain, to find a way out. Find a window in the infested area, and remove the window screen.
Within few minutes you will find the fruit flies near the window and escaping the room. Just be sure to close the window right away or you could end up inviting more fruit flies to your home.
Trap the Flies:
Wait for the fruit flies to land on a hard surface like a table, window or wall. After this carefully place a glass on top of the fly to trap it inside the glass. Slowly side a thick piece of paper underneath the glass, so that to trap the fly between the card and the glass. Hold the paper and glass firmly take the trapped fruit fly outside the home and release it there.
Catch the Fruit Flies With Hands:
Catching fruit flies can be a very difficult at first but with practice and strong determination you would be able to catch the fruit flies in the mid air with your bare hands and trap them. After this release them outside to make your home a happy place.
Invest in a Bug Vacuum:
Bug vacuums are a special device that helps you to trap small insects and later release them outside. A bug vacuum costs just a few bucks. To use a bug vacuum just hold the nozzle of the vacuum in the direction of fruit flies and then press the power button to suck the fruit flies in the dust bag. Later you can clean the dust bag and release the trapped insects.
Using Vanilla based repellent:
Fruit flies hate the smell of vanilla and we are going to use this against them in out next trap. To make this trap you would require following items:
- Shallow Jar with a lid
- 2 Cotton balls
- 10 – 15 fresh mint or sage leaves
- Vanilla extract (about 4 tablespoons)
- Cheese Cloth
First of all place the cotton balls in the bottom of the shallow jar. Add around 4 tablespoons of Vanilla extract in the jar. Then place few fresh sage leaves over the cotton balls. Make a hole in the lid of jar and place the lid on the jar by placing it over the cheese cloth.
Keep the jar in the fruit fly infested area and you will see fruit flies being repelled by its fragrance. The jar can be used for almost a week, so make sure to replace the contents each week.
